Looking after yourself between sessions
3-minute read
It’s common to feel tired, tearful or unsettled after a session, especially when we’re working with trauma. It usually means something important is shifting, not that something has gone wrong.
Small things that help
- Leave a little space after your session rather than going straight back to work or a busy house.
- Notice what you need: food, water, a walk, a bath, an early night.
- Use your grounding or breathing exercises before things build up, not just when they’re at their worst.
- Write down anything that comes up so you can bring it next time, without needing to solve it now.
- Let one trusted person know you’re in therapy, if that feels safe.
If things feel too much
Tell me at your next session, or get in touch beforehand. We can always slow down. If you feel unsafe, call NHS 111 and choose option 2, or Samaritans on 116 123. In an emergency, call 999.
